  International Summer Program Overview

Khanh Hoa is a coastal province in South Central Vietnam with a land area of 5,205 km2, a vast sea area to the east with more than 200 large and small islands and a population of approximately 1.2 million people (as of 2012). Nha Trang city is the capital of the province, home to approximately 400 thousands inhabitants. Nha Trang bay is ranked as one of the 29 most beautiful bays in the world. Thanks to the favorable climate and natural conditions, Nha Trang is a world famous destination not only for tourists looking to explore the area’s natural beauty, but also for marine researchers.

Located on Lasan Hill, about 3 km from the city center is Nha Trang University, with more than 50 years of history and development. Many faculty members have been trained in developed countries such as the U.S., Norway, UK, Australia, Japan, etc.. Nha Trang University is increasingly asserting its position as Vietnam’s leading institution in fisheries training and instruction in areas such as Aquaculture, Fishery Economics, Marine Biotechnology, etc.

Nha Trang University has designed the International Summer program to give learners and new friends the chance to participate in a hands-on learning experience at the nation’s premier fisheries training institute. The program allows for collaboration in research and training for participants in a place where they can experience the natural beauty of Nha Trang’s culture, people, and many islands. The International Summer program offers three courses, each giving learners a unique experience. There are courses in Tropical Marine Aquaculture, Tropical Marine Biodiversity and People and Livelihoods in South Central Vietnam. The content of the courses can be flexibly changed based on the need of the learners. In addition, courses with related fields can be designed and held upon learners' requests.

The program includes 3 main components:
I.  TROPICAL MARINE AQUACULTURE
This course will provide a comprehensive overview of the aquaculture field with an emphasis on the aquaculture industry in Vietnam, especially in the South Central region. Through attending lectures, hands-on activities and discussions with experts, participants will understand basic specialist knowledge on tropical aquaculture, including concepts such as marine creature biology; seed production and on-growing; disease prevention and treatment of aquatic animals, particularly marine finfish and crustaceans; and general knowledge on environmental and fish resource management.

II.  TROPICAL MARINE BIODIVERSITY
Vietnam has one of the world’s most diverse marine biological systems. This biodiversity feeds and supports not only local communities within Vietnam, but a growing international export market, as well.  Vietnam also is one of the world’s countries most at risk for loss of biodiversity due to climate change. With the risk due to both climate change and increased reliance on the marine system to support both local and international markets, it is imperative to understand not only the biodiversity that exists but also the factors that help maintain it, as the pressures on it increase.
