A Brock
Summer English Language Program (SELP) alumni herself, for the past 10 years Laura Espinosa Morales has been bringing students from her family’s high school, Liceo Freinet in Saltillio, Mexico, to the same program for the past 10 years. Brock’s Summer English Language Program is 5 weeks in duration and aims to improve English language skills through language courses and cultural experiences. Students in the SELP enjoy weekend trips to learn more about the Niagara region and in doing so, put their English skills into practice. This year, Brock welcomed 17 students from Liceo Freinet, and some of the students recently sat down with us to discuss their experience at Brock.
The students arrived on July 6 and will be returning to Mexico in August, where they will start their senior year of high school. During their time in Canada, they have enjoyed living with Canadian families from our
Homestay program and have visited Niagara Falls and Toronto and are planning a trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake. They have also had fun participating in activities such as drama workshops, swimming in the Brock pool, playing the video game Rock Band with the SELP Language Monitors and watching the World Cup in the International Centre on campus.
Coming to Canada has broadened their global experience by meeting other SELP students from China, Korea and Québec. They’ve also tried some Canadian foods, like poutine, and really liked it – however they are still trying to adjust to Canadian cuisine since it is different than Mexican cuisine.
The students told us that the SELP has helped them improve their English and has better prepared them for job opportunities in Mexico and abroad. Some of the students indicated that in the future they would like to pursue a career in fields such as engineering or medicine, and learning English will assist in their learning course material.
The
Summer English Language Program (SELP) is a 5-week program that runs from July to August every year at Brock. The program focuses on improving 5 major English language skills: reading, listening, writing, speaking and grammar, and it was designed to give students the opportunity to study English as a Second Language in a shorter amount of time.
The SELP is paired with the
Explore program, which is designed to offer French-Canadian students the opportunity to come to Brock and improve their English. With both SELP and Explore program, students not only get the opportunity to attend quality, in-class English lessons but also attend socio-cultural activities and planned events to experience St. Catharines and the Niagara region with their classmates.
This summer 134 students participated in the SELP. Some of the activities available to students were a day long trip to Canada’s Wonderland, a whirlpool jet boat ride on the Niagara River and a trip to Toronto to see the CN Tower and other major attractions. Most SELP students stay in our
Homestay accommodation, where they can live with a local Canadian family to learn more about Canadian culture and way of life, while providing the opportunity to speak English with their Homestay family.
Deciding on which courses to register for can be quite the process for an incoming student. With so many courses available at Brock, it can take time to pinpoint what courses are available to you, and which of those courses will also fulfill your degree requirements. For this reason, this section can offer tips to help you through the course selection and registration process.
- Check the requirements of your program, and find out what courses you need to take for the Fall/Winter session.
- Determine which courses you will take to satisfy any non-specific program requirements (i.e., where "two elective credits" are listed). Be sure that you also satisfy any prerequisites, requirements, and/or restrictions listed under the description of the particular course. If you do not satisfy a course's requirements/restrictions, either select another course or see if you are eligible for an override to register in the course.
- Ensure that your desired courses will work in a compatible and non-conflicting weekly schedule for the entire Fall/Winter session.
- Follow the online registration instructions to register for your courses. Follow along with the video above for a visual guide.
- Pay tuition and associated fees by the Payment Due Date.
