Welcome to the February edition of the Brock Boarding Pass!
|
Winter is in full effect here in Niagara and has graced us with a blanket of snow and some frigid temperatures. As we try to keep warm and stay busy inside, this month we bring you the story of Borui from China studying Visual Arts here at Brock. We also answer some of your questions about applying for Brock awards and scholarships. We'd also like to wish a happy Lunar New Year to those who celebrate!
As well, for those of you that live on a sub-tropical island, or are snowed in and can't make it to Brock's Open House on March 1st, we will be hosting our Virtual Open House on March 9th for you to attend online! Read on to learn more.

Hello, my name is Borui Li, I am a fourth year student in Visual Arts at Brock. I come from Harbin, China, the capital and largest city of Heilongjiang province. The reason why I chose to come to Brock was because of its unique Plus Programs and its beautiful natural surroundings. Brock is a school that lets students organize events and work in public relation jobs, which is different from my study experiences in China.
As an international student, I really appreciate the experiences Brock has given me. I was able to join the International Students Association as their marketing manager, which gives me opportunities to work with all of the international students at Brock and get involved within the Brock community. I also volunteered to be a peer helper and a conversation partner, talking to people from different cultural backgrounds always makes me happy.
One of the biggest challenges I've faced since moving to Canada is the language barrier. I was struggling to understand the lectures and group seminar discussions. When I first arrived, I didn't push myself hard enough to learn more advanced English concepts. But thanks to my friends supported me and Brock Learning Services gave me a lot of help as well. They made me feel like I wasn't alone in my struggles.
Overall, studying at Brock has enriched my life and I feel so lucky that I gained such precious experiences living in Canada and at Brock.
Our Student Awards and Financial Aid Office recognizes student success and supports students in financial need. They understand how busy the school year can be, and how stressful finding financial aid is. To support students they have developed one application for all awards and bursaries that Brock University has to offer, it is called OneApp.
What is OneApp?
OneApp is a special application Brock has specifically designed to help students apply for all the awards and bursaries that Brock has to offer. The application is a one stop shop where you fill out information about yourself, your finances, your parents' finances, what your expenses will be as well as any volunteering or activities you are involved in. This way the Student Awards team is able to match you to as many awards as possible.
How do I apply?
You can find OneApp under SAFA on your Student Self Serve page at my.brocku.ca. Simply begin the application by filling out all the information required, and saving it after you have completed each section. Once you have completed the OneApp, the rest is up to the Student Awards department. You can check your eligibility and the status of your application by going to the Student Awards and Financial Aid Award Status page on the Applicant and Student Self Serve page of my.brocku.ca
Do I have to do anything after I submit OneApp?
The Student Awards department is responsible for screening and matching applicants to specific awards, but there are some awards that require more information or even additional application questions. You can check if you are eligible for any of the awards that require some extra steps by going to the Student Awards and Financial Aid Award Status page on the Applicant and Student Self Serve page of my.brocku.ca. If some awards require extra work it will be listed on this page!
When is the deadline for applications?
For new students the deadline to apply and submit supplemental information is March 31, 2015! To ensure that there are no problems with your OneApp, be sure to submit it as soon as possible!
Remember to watch out for our new Award Wednesdays on Facebook and Twitter where we will be profiling different International Awards for incoming students!
